Learn American Sign Language the Fun Way!

Cathy Bishop signing the word “contact”

Cathy Bishop, resident of Essex, always thought the language of the Deaf was a beautiful language. After her children were grown she returned to school and graduated with a degree in American Sign Language and Deaf Studies. She taught ASL in Vermont Adult Education for three years and also volunteered in the Deaf community.

Cathy believes that ASL is an important language to learn because it enables you to communicate with the Deaf community. It has also been shown to improve reading skills and cognition.

Cathy teaches her classes by using techniques that allow her students to use the language in everyday life. She uses games to help learning the language and make the classes fun. She includes in her class studies in deaf history.

The class begins at the Ivoryton Library Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. and runs for 8 weeks. Each class attended is $3. Call the library at 860 767-1252 for more information.
